Uber Tap
Uber
Background
For many older passengers, ride-hailing apps can feel difficult to use because they require smartphones, digital payment and multiple steps before a journey can even begin. This can make services like Uber less accessible to people who may need convenient transport the most.
Insight
Accessibility is not only about adding more features. Sometimes it means removing digital barriers and making a service work through a gesture people already understand. For older users, tapping a familiar thing can feel much easier than navigating an app.
Idea
Uber Tap is an accessible ride-hailing system that allows older passengers to book an Uber by tapping a dedicated device at local pick-up points. By turning the booking process into a simple tap interaction, the service makes Uber easier, faster and more inclusive for users who are less confident with smartphones.
Indicator
The device uses the Uber wordmark as a simple visual indicator for each stage of the journey. After the user taps to book a ride, the 'u' flashes to show the request has started; once the booking is confirmed and a driver is assigned, the 'u' stays lit, while the light gradually fills the 'ber' lettering as the driver gets closer. When the driver arrives at the pick-up point, the full wordmark flashes to clearly signal that the ride is ready.
